Ibrahima Konate will leave Liverpool FC at the end of his contract this summer, bringing an end to a five-year spell at Anfield.
The club confirmed the news on Sunday after negotiations over a contract extension failed to produce an agreement. Konate had previously expressed optimism about reaching a new deal, but talks ultimately broke down, paving the way for his departure as a free agent.
In an official statement, Liverpool thanked the defender for his contribution and wished him success in the next chapter of his career.
Successful Spell at Anfield
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konate established himself as one of Liverpool’s most important defenders.
The French international played a key role in the club’s Premier League title-winning campaign in 2024/25 and helped the Reds secure multiple domestic trophies, including two League Cups and an FA Cup.
Known for his strength, pace, and aerial dominance, Konate formed several successful defensive partnerships during his time on Merseyside and became a fan favourite through his consistent performances.
Difficult Final Season
Konate’s final season at Liverpool proved challenging both on and off the pitch.
His performances dipped during a disappointing campaign for the Reds, while personal tragedy also affected the defender after the passing of his father earlier this year.
The squad was additionally impacted by the heartbreaking loss of teammate Diogo Jota, whose death in a car accident shocked the football world.
In his farewell message, Konate reflected on those difficult moments while expressing gratitude to the club and supporters.
“Representing this club has been an honour. We’ve shared incredible moments together, highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever.”
Liverpool Facing Major Squad Changes
Konate becomes the latest high-profile departure from Liverpool, following the exits of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
The club is also entering a period of transition after the reported departure of manager Arne Slot, adding further uncertainty ahead of the new season.
PSG Move on the Horizon?
Konate has been strongly linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with the European champions reportedly interested in bringing the Paris-born defender back to France.
Should the move materialize, Konate would return to his home city and join one of Europe’s strongest squads as PSG continue to build on their recent continental success.
Liverpool May Enter Defensive Market
Although Liverpool are expected to welcome Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais in a deal reportedly worth £60 million, Konate’s exit could force the club to seek additional defensive reinforcements.
Replacing a player of Konate’s experience and quality will be a major challenge as Liverpool prepare for a new era following several significant departures.
