Michael Carrick criticises referee after Lisandro Martinez red card in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United at Old Trafford.

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has strongly criticised referee Paul Tierney following the controversial red card shown to Lisandro Martinez during their 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

The incident occurred in the second half at Old Trafford when Martinez was sent off after an altercation with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. After a VAR review, the referee decided to issue a straight red card, a decision that Carrick described as “one of the worst” he has seen.

At the time of the dismissal, United were already trailing after a first-half double from Noah Okafor. Although Casemiro pulled one goal back, United were unable to recover, suffering their second defeat under Carrick.

Carrick expressed frustration not only with the red card but also with earlier decisions in the match, claiming there had been a foul on Leny Yoro in the build-up to Leeds’ opening goal that went unpunished. He suggested that inconsistent officiating played a major role in the outcome of the game.

The Manchester United boss also hinted that the club could consider appealing the decision, with Martinez now facing a potential three-match suspension. Despite the loss, United remain in a strong position in the Premier League standings as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.

They now turn their focus to a crucial upcoming clash against Chelsea, which could play a key role in determining their top-five finish this season.
