Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly decided against appointing former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa as their next head coach as the Bundesliga club continues its search for a successor to Kasper Hjulmand.
According to reports from Germany, Arbeloa’s representatives approached Leverkusen officials regarding the vacant managerial position following his departure from Real Madrid. However, after internal discussions and a thorough assessment, the club opted not to pursue the appointment.
The 43-year-old Spaniard recently completed a short spell in charge of Real Madrid’s first team after taking over on an interim basis earlier this year. During his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, Arbeloa guided the club to a second-place finish before making way for José Mourinho, who is expected to begin a new era in Madrid.
Leverkusen Not Convinced
Despite Arbeloa’s impressive playing career and strong ties to Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen reportedly believe he lacks the managerial experience required to lead the club at this stage.
The German side had closely monitored Arbeloa’s development while he was coaching Real Madrid’s youth teams, particularly the U19 squad. Club scouts and decision-makers reportedly concluded that while the Spaniard has significant potential, he is not yet ready to take charge of a team expected to challenge for major trophies domestically and in Europe.
Leverkusen remain determined to appoint a coach capable of maintaining the club’s competitive standards and mounting a serious challenge against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Managerial Search Faces Obstacles
The rejection of Arbeloa comes amid a difficult search for a new manager.
Leverkusen have already missed out on several high-profile candidates. Former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, who had been strongly linked with the role, reportedly chose to join Monaco instead.
Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola, another leading target, is believed to be focused on opportunities elsewhere, with reports linking the Spanish coach to the managerial vacancy at Liverpool.
These setbacks have forced Leverkusen to widen their search as sporting director Simon Rolfes and CEO Fernando Carro continue their efforts to identify the right candidate.
Focus Remains on Long-Term Success
Following years of progress and recent domestic success, Leverkusen are determined not to rush the decision. Club officials are prioritising experience, tactical quality and leadership as they seek a coach capable of building on the foundations established in recent seasons.
With pre-season preparations approaching, the Bundesliga outfit is expected to intensify its search in the coming weeks as it looks to appoint a manager who can guide the club back into the title race and compete at the highest level of European football.
