Manchester City’s plans to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new manager have hit a temporary delay as compensation negotiations with Chelsea continue.
The Premier League champions have identified the Italian coach as their preferred successor to Pep Guardiola following the Spaniard’s departure after a historic decade at the Etihad Stadium. However, legal discussions between City and Chelsea are currently holding up the move.
According to reports, Maresca still had three-and-a-half years remaining on his Chelsea contract when he left Stamford Bridge in January, forcing both clubs to negotiate a compensation package before an official appointment can be completed.
City remain optimistic that an agreement will be reached in the coming days, allowing them to announce Maresca as their new head coach ahead of pre-season preparations.
Maresca’s Chelsea Success
Maresca impressed during his time at Chelsea, overseeing 92 matches and recording 55 victories. His spell at Stamford Bridge included success in both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup during the 2024-25 season.
Before his departure midway through the current campaign, the Italian guided Chelsea through 19 Premier League matches, registering eight wins, six draws and five defeats.
His tactical approach, ability to develop young talent and experience working within the Manchester City football structure have made him a leading candidate for the role.
Guardiola Era Comes to an End
The appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Manchester City following Guardiola’s departure after ten trophy-laden years.
Under Guardiola, City dominated English football, winning six Premier League titles alongside numerous domestic and international honours. His influence transformed the club into one of the most successful teams in world football.
Speaking recently about his future, Guardiola suggested he plans to take a break from management.
“After, we’ll see what happens. I don’t have a plan, it’s just to rest and do a lot of things I want to do that I didn’t do in the past,” Guardiola said.
Major Backroom Changes Expected
Maresca’s arrival is expected to trigger significant changes behind the scenes at Manchester City.
Several key members of Guardiola’s coaching and support staff are also leaving the club, including assistant coaches, fitness personnel and senior football operations staff.
As a result, City will need to build a new backroom team around Maresca as they prepare for the 2026-27 season and aim to maintain their position among Europe’s elite clubs.
For now, all attention remains on the ongoing negotiations with Chelsea as Manchester City work to finalise one of the most significant managerial appointments of the summer.
