A new trial into Diego Maradona’s death begins in Argentina, with seven medical professionals accused of negligence in the football legend’s care.

A new trial into the death of football legend Diego Maradona is set to begin in Argentina, nearly a year after the original case was halted due to a judicial scandal.

Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery at his home in Buenos Aires. His death was caused by heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, raising serious questions about the level of care he received during his recovery.

The case centers on seven medical professionals who were responsible for his treatment, including doctors, nurses, and a psychiatrist. Prosecutors allege that the team acted with gross negligence, potentially contributing to his death. If found guilty, they could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.

The initial trial collapsed in 2025 after it was revealed that one of the judges involved had participated in a documentary about the case, leading to concerns over impartiality and ethics. The judge was later removed, forcing the legal process to restart.

The new trial is expected to include testimony from around 120 witnesses, including members of Maradona’s family, as the court seeks to determine whether his death could have been prevented.

Maradona’s passing shocked the world and sparked massive public mourning in Argentina, underlining his lasting legacy in global football. The upcoming trial is expected to run for several months as the case continues to draw international attention.
