The 2026 FIFA World Cup is facing a major diplomatic hurdle as the Iranian Football Federation (FFI) admits it is “unlikely” the national team will travel to North America this June. The uncertainty follows escalating military tensions involving the United States—one of the tournament’s primary hosts—and Israel.
Iran, currently ranked 20th in the FIFA World Rankings, had successfully qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Crucially, all of Iran’s group-stage fixtures are scheduled to take place on U.S. soil.
FFI President: “Participation Unlikely”
In a statement that has rattled the AFC (Asian Football Confederation), FFI President Mehdi Taj expressed grave doubts during a broadcast on Iranian public television.
“With the current situation and the actions involving the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the World Cup. Our domestic league has been suspended indefinitely while sports chiefs and government officials make the final call.” — Mehdi Taj
FIFA’s Stance: “Premature to Comment”
FIFA General Secretary Mattias Grafström, speaking from a meeting in Wales, maintained a cautious tone. While acknowledging the tension, he stated that FIFA is focused on a “safe World Cup” and remains in constant communication with the three host governments (USA, Canada, and Mexico).
Who Could Replace Iran?
If Iran officially withdraws or is suspended, FIFA regulations dictate that a replacement should ideally come from the same confederation (AFC). Two frontrunners have emerged:
United Arab Emirates (UAE): As the highest-placed non-qualifier in the final rounds behind Iran, the UAE stands as the most logical sporting replacement.
Iraq: Having reached the inter-confederation playoffs, Iraq could be elevated directly to the group stages, with their playoff spot potentially reassigned to the UAE.
