In a historic Kariakoo Derby held at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, Steve Barker’s Simba SC and arch-rivals Young Africans (Yanga) played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw on Sunday. Despite Simba’s clear dominance throughout the encounter, the result leaves them trailing the league leaders by five points in the NBC Premier League title race.

The match, relocated to Zanzibar due to ongoing renovations at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, lived up to its reputation as one of Africa’s fiercest rivalries. While the traditional 70,000-capacity crowd in Dar es Salaam was replaced by a vibrant island atmosphere, the intensity on the pitch remained at a boiling point.

Match Highlights: Simba’s Dominance Denied

Under the guidance of former Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker, Simba appeared the hungrier of the two sides. They controlled the tempo and created several high-quality openings, only to be thwarted by Yanga’s Mali international goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra. Diarra’s heroic saves earned him the Man of the Match honors as he single-handedly kept the “Red Lions” at bay.

The game’s most talking point arrived in the 70th minute when Simba finally found the back of the net. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the effort was controversially ruled out for offside, a decision that sparked heated debate among fans and pundits alike.

Tactical Perspective & Standing

For Steve Barker, the draw is a symbolic victory of sorts. Simba had suffered six consecutive defeats against Yanga in previous head-to-head meetings, and this performance signaled a significant shift in momentum since his arrival in January.

The NBC Premier League Table (Top 3):

  1. Young Africans: 29 Points (11 Matches)
  2. JKT Tanzania: 28 Points (17 Matches)
  3. Simba SC: 24 Points (11 Matches)

With both clubs recently eliminated from the CAF Champions League group stages, the focus now shifts entirely to the domestic marathon. Yanga is chasing their fifth consecutive league title, while Simba—who last won the league in 2021—looks to close the gap in the remaining fixtures.
